Kami ingin mengabdi hanya di madrasah saja, menjadi guru swasta, dan dosen swasta, di kampus di lingkungan pondok pesantren di Pancor Lombok Timur.
Saya mulai mengajar, menjadi guru dan dosen honorer sejak 1992. Untuk mencukupi biaya hidup, di samping mengajar saya berjualan jam tangan, dengan koper kecil, door to door.

Saya berangkat berjualan hari jumat dan balik ahad malam. Sehingga senin sudah di sekolah atau di kampus. Saya berjualan sampai pulau Sumbawa. Sampai kecamatan Empang dan Plampang, bahkan juga tiga kali menginjak kecamatan Lunyuk, konon orang Sumbawa jarang yang sampai ke Lunyuk. Di Sumbawa Besar biasanya saya menginap di kampung Bugis. Dekat Terminal lama.
Saya sering duduk di perempatan Plampang, saat itu masih berdebu, sangat panas. Beberapa sopir Fuso Bima Surabaya saya kenal, mereka sangat baik. Meskipun saya tidak punya uang, mereka menyuruh naik. “Kita sama-sama cari rezeki, naik saja”. Pas mereka berhenti untuk makan, mereka mengajak sama-sama makan. Mereka orang-orang yang berpenampilan sangar, tapi berhati emas.
Suatu saat ketika baru pulang dari berjualan dari Sumbawa, seorang teman saya, lulusan D3 Matematika Universitas Udayana, dengan agak semangat berseru, “Guru, jauk ku ijazah de aneng dikbud. ( Guru saya bawa ijazahnya ke kantor dikbud) “.
” Yo kenapa dibawa ke dikbud”? ” Saya tanya.
” Ada bukaan Pegawai Negeri”.
” Yo saya gini- gini aja dah, supaya lebih bebas”
” Ah sudahlah, jangan terlalu idealis. Saya juga daftar. Siapa tahu rezeki kita”.
Ternyata yang mendaftar S1 Matematika 19 orang, yang dicari 27 orang ( saat itu di NTB belum ada S1 Matematika, Unram dan STKIP Hamzanwadi baru buka D3 Matematika). Saya dinyatakan lulus, teman yang mendaftarkan saya tidak lulus, karena saingannya D3 Matematika banyak. Jadilah saya PNS.
Istri saya juga jadi PNS tanpa pernah mendaftar menjadi PNS. Dia guru Bantu ditempatkan di MTs Muallimat NW Pancor.
Saat itu, 2006, ada yang memberi tahu. Ketika para ibu ngomong-ngoming setelah pengajian Al Hidayah di Pendopo Bupati, zaman Bupati Lombok Timur pak Syahdan, ada yang bilang, “Ada pengumuman guru Bantu yang mendapatkan SK pegawai negeri. Tinggal satu orang yang belum pemberkasan, sudah hampir satu bulan ditunggu, tempat lahirnya Madiun, bu Titik namanya.”
Dengan tergesa-gesa istri saya melihat pengumuman, ternyata benar namanya, Dra. Titik Hermiati, tempat lahir Madiun.
Sangat sulit menemukan berkas transkrip nilainya, karena sudah 14 tahun tamat, FKIP Unud sudah berganti nema menjadi STKIP Negeri Singaraja, dan kemudian menjadi IKIP Negeri Singaraja. Sudah dicari di kampus lama dan kampus baru tidak ketemu juga.
Hampir putus asa, berbekal draft transkrip nilai tulis tangan yang dulu diajukan sebelum wisuda, saya coba menghadap Pembantu Dekan I, bidang akademik. Tak dinyana, dia berkata, ” Titik Hermiati ini teman saya KKN di Kintamani dulu, dia saja yang rajin memasakkan kita. Orangnya rajin. Di mana dia sekarang? “
” Di Lombok, ” Saya jawab singkat.
” Oh pantas tidak pernah ikut reuni, begitu tamat dia menghilang, Bapak suaminya? “.
Saya mengangguk, sambil menyampaikan maksud tujuan saya. Tanpa ngomong banyak, langsung dibuatkan. Jadilah istri saya PNS. Tanpa perlu tes dan mendaftar menjadi PNS. Apakah semua ini kebetulan? Tidak. Tidak ada kebetulan bagi Allah. Allah sudah mengaturnya sedemikian rupa, ribuan tahun sebelum kita lahir.
Dari sinilah saya sangat menghayati dan membuktikan Firman Allah dalam surat Ar Rahman ayat 60, hal jazaa ul ihsani illal ihsan. Tidak ada balasan kebaikan selain kebaikan.
Lakukan kebaikan, kapanpun dan dimanapun, jangan pernah bertanya apa balasannya, karena Allah sudah mempersiapkan balasan yang lebih baik. Jika Allah menghendaki sesuatu, tidak ada apapun yang bisa menghalanginya. (JIKA ALLAH MENGHENDAKI TIDAK ADA YANG BISA MENGHALANGI )
